DSG / S-TRONIC
The DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) which translates from its original German name Direkt Schalt Getriebe, is the worlds first production line dual clutch gearbox.
Launched in 2003 the first units were fitted to the VW MK4 Golf and then slowly introduced to the rest of the transversely orientated engine range.
These units are known as the DQ250 02E consisting of a "wet clutch" system coming in both front two wheel drive and four wheel drive versions.
In 2008 a new 7-speed "dry clutch" system was introduced to the range, however with a lower power transmission capability this new design was limited to models with engines under 2000cc.
The unit was indentified as the DQ200 0AM later to be superceeded by the 0CW prefix.
Later that same year, a new longitudinal 7-speed "wet clutch" version was released initially on Audi models. This unit was designed to allow the same dual clutch gearbox concept to be fitted on the larger, more powerful models in the VAG range which adopted the longitudinal mounted engine type. The unit known as an S-Tronic rather than DSG had an identification code of DL501 with an 0B5 part number.
With these three models in production, some of which for a few years, there was one gap in the applications due to the limit of what the DQ250 02E could handle and the size and orientation of the DL501 0B5 unit.
This is why in 2010 the 6-speed DQ500 0BH/OBT was produced to allow the high powered front wheel drive and transverse four wheel drive vehicles, to benefit from the DSG design.

COMMON DSG FAULTS
Each model of the DSG gearbox range has it's own particular set of faults, some of which are more common than others.
Over time we will post individual, in depth blog posts, covering the range of faults in each particular DSG transmission and what can be done to repair them.
