FAQS
MANUAL GEARBOX
Q. WHAT DOES A MANUAL GEARBOX REPAIR COST?
A. As a guide the average cost to repair a manual gearbox is around £600 or £900 if the gearbox is still on the vehicle. However the price to repair a manual gearbox varies massively depending on the fault and the make of the gearbox. Some gearbox faults can not be repaired due to the extent of the damage or a lack of available parts from the manufacturer.
Q. WHAT DOES A NEW GEARBOX COST?
A. A new gearbox from the manufacturer will start anywhere from £1000 upwards, however will more than likely range between £2000-£5000. The other issue with a new gearbox is availability, some can take months to arrive as it is not something that will be sitting on the shelf at your local dealership.
Q. WHAT DOES A GEARBOX BEARING REPLACEMENT COST?
A. On average around £400. However again there are various factors that can increase that amount by a substantial amount. It is always good practice to replace a complete set of bearings and in some cases this is the only option.
Q. WHAT ARE A WORN SYNCHROMESH SYMPTOMS?
A. Worn synchromesh rings will result in a crunching / grinding sound when selecting gears. This is normally more common in the lower gears except 1st, as the car is normally going from standing start when selecting 1st. The crunching will ultimately lead to the complete loss of gear due to damage caused to the gear.
